NCAA Division 1 Football Scholarships Explained

What Is NCAA Division 1?

NCAA Division 1 is the highest level of intercollegiate athletics in the United States. D1 football programmes typically have the largest budgets, the best facilities and the most competitive schedules. For football (soccer), D1 programmes operate under the NCAA's rules on scholarships, eligibility and competition.

How D1 Scholarships Work

NCAA Division 1 men's football programmes are allowed to offer a maximum of 9.9 full-equivalent scholarships per team. This means the total scholarship budget for the team is equivalent to 9.9 full scholarships — but coaches can divide this among more players.

For example, a coach might offer 18 players each a half scholarship, rather than 9 players full scholarships and one player a partial. This is common — most D1 football players receive partial rather than full scholarships.

Women's football (soccer) in Division 1 is a head-count sport, meaning scholarships must be awarded as full scholarships to a maximum of 14 players.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for NCAA Division 1, you must:

• Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center
• Complete 16 core courses in high school (or equivalent UK qualifications)
• Meet the minimum GPA (typically 2.3 on a 4.0 scale for D1)
• Meet the sliding scale combining GPA and SAT/ACT scores
• Maintain amateur status
• Graduate from high school (or equivalent)

UK qualifications are accepted, but you should have them evaluated by the Eligibility Center early in the process.

What D1 Coaches Look For

D1 coaches recruit players who can contribute at the highest level of college football. They typically look for:

• Strong technical and tactical ability
• Excellent physical attributes — speed, agility, endurance
• A high football IQ — decision-making, positioning, awareness
• Competitive experience at a high level (academy, national team, high-level non-league)
• Academic eligibility — a player who cannot qualify cannot play
• Coachability and the right attitude

Is D1 Right for You?

D1 football is demanding. The training and competition schedule is intense, and the standard is high. If you are at or near academy level, have strong physical attributes and are committed to both football and academics, D1 could be an excellent pathway.
