    What Is NCAA Division 2?

NCAA Division 2 sits between Division 1 and Division 3 in terms of competition level and scholarship resources. D2 programmes offer athletic scholarships (unlike D3) but with smaller budgets than D1. For many UK and international players, D2 represents a realistic and excellent pathway — competitive football, a good education and a scholarship that helps with costs.

    How D2 Scholarships Work

Division 2 men's football programmes are allowed a maximum of 9.0 full-equivalent scholarships per team. As with D1, coaches can divide this among more players — so most D2 footballers receive partial scholarships.

D2 women's football programmes are allowed 9.9 full-equivalent scholarships, also typically divided among multiple players.

In addition to athletic scholarships, D2 programmes can offer academic and need-based financial aid, which can help bridge the gap.

    Eligibility Requirements

D2 eligibility requirements are slightly more flexible than D1:

    • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center
    • Complete 16 core courses
    • Minimum GPA of 2.2 on a 4.0 scale
    • Meet the D2 sliding scale (GPA + SAT/ACT)
    • Maintain amateur status

The slightly lower GPA requirement and more flexible sliding scale make D2 accessible to a wider range of UK players.

    What D2 Coaches Look For

D2 coaches look for players who can compete at a high level but may not quite reach D1 standard. They value:

    • Strong club or non-league experience
    • Good technical ability and football understanding
    • Physical attributes that can develop further
    • Academic eligibility — critical at all levels
    • A positive attitude and willingness to work
    • Players who fill specific positional needs

Why D2 May Be the Best Fit for UK Players

For many UK players, D2 is the sweet spot. The standard is high enough to challenge and develop you, but the academic and athletic requirements are more accessible than D1. D2 programmes are often at smaller institutions, which can mean more individual attention, a tighter community and a better balance between football and academics.

If you are a regular starter at a good non-league or county-level club, D2 is a realistic target. Combine that with strong academics and a well-prepared highlight video, and you can attract serious interest.
